Our brains are not wired to perform two or more cognitively loaded tasks simultaneously. This is why, multi-tasking is discouraged even in organizations where there are so many tasks to be done for result achievement. However, on any given day there is so much to do and to deliver which is why we engage in switching between tasks as accorded by the urgent and/or important. This switching is known as ‘time-sharing’ which works in this fashion – the brain is trained to actively focus on only one task at a time, and then shift focus to the next. This shift in focus is so fast that our brain does not notice that only one task is focused upon at a time. You may feel you are multi-tasking however, you are time-sharing – real efficiently.
