The ITIL® Practitioner Certification Course will be of interest to:


  • Individuals who have their ITIL® Foundation Certificate (or the ITIL® v2 Foundation + v3 Foundation Bridge certificate)
  • IT professionals working in or new to a Service Transition environment and requiring a detailed understanding of the concepts, processes, functions and activities involved.
  • A typical role includes (but is not restricted to): CIOs, CTOs, managers, supervisory staff, team leaders, designers, architects, planners, IT consultants, IT audit managers, IT security managers, service test managers and ITSM trainers.

Candidates for this course must:


  • Hold an ITIL® Foundation Certificate or ITIL® v2 Foundation + v3 Foundation Bridge Certificate
  • There is no minimum mandatory requirement but 2 to 4 years professional experience working in IT Service Management is highly desirable
  • It is also strongly recommended that candidates:
  • Can demonstrate familiarity with IT terminology and understand the context of Service Offerings and Agreements management of their own business environment is strongly recommended
  • Have exposure working in the service management capacity within a service provider environment,
  • It is recommended that candidates are familiar with the guidance detailed in the ITIL® Service Lifecycle Practices core publications prior to attending training for this certification.

The exam is based on various elements of the ITIL® core material, from the Planning to Implement Service Management publication, and supplementary guidance that is being authored covering practical application techniques in more detail.At a high level, the following areas are covered by the qualification: Area Description

CSI Approach

  • Using the CSI Approach as an organizing framework to lead a person and/or team through practical adoption of ITIL®/ITSM guidance. Includes selected specific methods and techniques to use during particular steps of the approach.

Guiding Principles

  • A set of broad principles that should be used to guide decisions and actions when adopting ITIL®/ITSM – typically as a person and/or team moves through the steps of the CSI Approach.

Critical Competencies

  • Three areas in which it is critical for a practitioner and/or organization to have and apply competencies in order for them to be successful in adopting the ITIL®/ITSM guidance:
  • Communication
  • Measurement & Metrics
  • Organizational Change Management



  • Evidence of ITIL® Foundation Certificate or ITIL® v2 Foundation + v3 Foundation Bridge Certificate
  • It is recommended that students should complete at least 12 hours of personal study by reviewing the syllabus and the associated areas of the ITIL® Service Management Practice core guidance in preparation for the examination
  • The exam will be a scenario-based multiple-choice exam supported by a case study that tests the candidate’s ability to apply the knowledge and skills studied in the best possible way.
  • The examination is scenario-based i.e. the questions relate to a case study. This case study (referred to as the ‘Scenario’) is the same for all sample and official exams.
  • The Scenario is included in the Scenario Booklet along with 6 sets of additional information necessary to answer each section of questions
  • There are 6 sets of multiple choice questions (MCQs) in the Question Booklet, and each set tests particular learning outcomes from the candidate’s course of study
  • There are 40 questions in total and each question is worth 1 mark
  • Pass score is 28/40 or 70%
