Experience must be earned within the 10 years before applying, or within five years after passing the exam.
Experience waivers (partial only)
Up to two years of the general experience requirement can be substituted — holding a CISA or CISSP credential, or a postgraduate degree in a related field, can qualify for this waiver. The Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) certification from ISACA is one of the most sought-after credentials among India's information security professionals — valued heavily across BFSI, IT/ITeS, healthcare, and government sectors where governance and risk accountability are non-negotiable. Unlike hands-on technical security certifications, CISM certification training in India builds expertise in governance, risk management, security program development, and incident management — positioning professionals for CISO-track and security leadership roles across enterprises in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, and Delhi NCR.
Starting 3 November 2026, ISACA is rolling out an updated CISM job practice worldwide, including for candidates testing at Pearson VUE centers across India. The refreshed CISM 2026 exam places greater weight on information security strategy and security program development, and introduces two new focus areas: enterprise architecture and information security architecture. For India's fast-growing GCC (Global Capability Centre) and enterprise IT sector, this shift reflects exactly the kind of business-aligned security leadership organizations are hiring for.
⏳ This is a hard cutover, not a gradual rollout. Every CISM exam scheduled on or after 3 November 2026 — including at Indian test centers — will be tested against the new blueprint. If you're targeting an exam date this year, your current-blueprint prep window is closing.
CISM-certified professionals in India are increasingly sought after by MNCs, GCCs, and domestic enterprises building out security governance functions, which is part of why CISM remains one of the highest ROI certifications for security managers and consultants in the Indian market.
The CISM exam evaluates your ability to manage enterprise information security across four core disciplines: governance, risk management, program development, and incident management, based on ISACA's official 2026 Exam Content Outline (ECO) — effective for exams on or after 3 November 2026, including all Indian test centers.
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Domain 1: Information Security Governance | 18% |
| Domain 2: Information Security Risk Management | 20% |
| Domain 3: Information Security Program | 33% |
| Domain 4: Incident Management | 29% |
Booking your exam through Pearson VUE India on or after 3 November 2026 means you'll be tested on the new job practice — legacy prep material won't cover the new architecture-focused domains or the revised question patterns.
Updated CISM 2026 exam prep materials start launching from 1 September 2026 — built around the revised ISACA objectives from day one. For candidates in India planning Q4 2026 or early 2027 exam dates, early access to updated prep means a real head start on the two brand-new domains.
Early-access CISM 2026 prep cohorts in India are limited. Professionals who start now get ahead of the rush as the 3 November deadline approaches.

Is the CISM exam going to change?
Yes — starting 3 November 2026, ISACA is updating the CISM exam with a new job practice. The changes bring more focus on information security strategy and security program development, plus two new areas: enterprise architecture and information security architecture. Anyone booking an exam on or after that date will be tested on the new version — there's no grace period for the old one.
When is the CISM exam changing?
The update takes effect on 3 November 2026. Every CISM exam scheduled on or after that date — including at test centers in India — follows the new 2026 job practice. If your exam is booked before then, you're still tested on the current version.
Do I need to study differently for the new CISM exam?
Yes, to some extent. The core structure stays the same, but the added focus on enterprise architecture and information security architecture means older prep materials won't fully cover what's being tested. Updated 2026-ready study materials start becoming available from 1 September 2026, so if your exam date falls after the November cutover, it's worth waiting for or switching to prep that's built around the new outline.
Will I need to retake CISM if I'm already certified?
No. The 2026 update only affects candidates sitting the exam on or after 3 November 2026 — it doesn't change anything for professionals who are already CISM-certified. Existing certifications remain valid, and you'll continue meeting your CPE requirements as usual to maintain them.
Does the new CISM exam cost more?
ISACA hasn't tied the job practice update to an exam fee change — the update affects exam content, not pricing. It's still worth checking ISACA's official fee page closer to your exam date, since fees can shift independently of content updates and sometimes vary by membership status.
Will the CISM exam get harder with the 2026 update?
Not necessarily harder, but different. The added focus on enterprise architecture and information security architecture means the exam expects a broader, more strategic view of security's role in the business — rather than testing more content overall. Candidates coming from a pure technical background may find the governance and architecture angle takes more adjustment than someone already working close to business strategy.
