Eligibility Criteria
Work experience
Candidates need five years of professional information security work experience, with a minimum of three years in information security management. That management experience must be spread across at least three of the four CISM domains (governance, risk management, program development, and incident management).
Experience timing window
Experience must be earned within the 10 years before applying, or within five years after passing the exam.
Experience waivers (partial only)
Up to two years of the general experience requirement can be substituted — holding a CISA or CISSP credential, or a postgraduate degree in a related field, can qualify for this waiver. Important caveat: waivers only reduce the total experience requirement — the three-year management minimum can't be waived.
Exam-first path
You don't need to meet the experience requirement before sitting the exam. You can take the CISM exam before completing the work experience, and once your scores are released you pay the application fee and apply for certification. After passing, you have five years to apply.

- A one-time $50 application processing fee (separate from the exam fee)
- Independent verification of your experience by a supervisor

You need to earn and report at least 20 CPE hours annually, totaling 120 hours over a three-year period, plus an annual maintenance fee to ISACA

With the launch of continuous testing exam administration in June 2019, ISACA has implemented the following CISM exam retake policy.
Individuals can take an exam four times in a rolling year (the initial attempt and three retakes - the 365 rolling calendar date is from the date of the first exam attempt).
Please note: Individuals retaking an exam are required to purchase a new exam registration for each exam attempt.
After taking and not passing the exam (attempt 1):
Retake 1 (attempt 2): Customers must wait 30 days from the date of the first attempt
Retake 2, (attempt 3): Customers must wait 90 days after the date of the second attempt
Retake 3 (attempt 4): Customers must wait 90 days after the date of the third attempt

Is the CISM exam going to change?
Yes — starting 3 November 2026, ISACA is updating the CISM exam with a new job practice. The changes bring more focus on information security strategy and security program development, plus two new areas: enterprise architecture and information security architecture. Anyone booking an exam on or after that date will be tested on the new version — there's no grace period for the old one.
When is the CISM exam changing?
The update takes effect on 3 November 2026. Every CISM exam scheduled on or after that date — including at test centers in India — follows the new 2026 job practice. If your exam is booked before then, you're still tested on the current version.
Do I need to study differently for the new CISM exam?
Yes, to some extent. The core structure stays the same, but the added focus on enterprise architecture and information security architecture means older prep materials won't fully cover what's being tested. Updated 2026-ready study materials start becoming available from 1 September 2026, so if your exam date falls after the November cutover, it's worth waiting for or switching to prep that's built around the new outline.
Will I need to retake CISM if I'm already certified?
No. The 2026 update only affects candidates sitting the exam on or after 3 November 2026 — it doesn't change anything for professionals who are already CISM-certified. Existing certifications remain valid, and you'll continue meeting your CPE requirements as usual to maintain them.
Does the new CISM exam cost more?
ISACA hasn't tied the job practice update to an exam fee change — the update affects exam content, not pricing. It's still worth checking ISACA's official fee page closer to your exam date, since fees can shift independently of content updates and sometimes vary by membership status.
Will the CISM exam get harder with the 2026 update?
Not necessarily harder, but different. The added focus on enterprise architecture and information security architecture means the exam expects a broader, more strategic view of security's role in the business — rather than testing more content overall.
