These criteria ensure that candidates have the necessary education, experience, and training to successfully apply for the PMP® certification.
The PMP examination consists of 180 questions, out of which 5 are pre-test questions. These pre-test questions do not affect your score, and their purpose is to help validate future exam questions. The pre-test questions are randomly distributed throughout the exam. For more details on the current item types in the exam, refer to the PMP Exam Updates page on PMI.org.

You are given 230 minutes to complete the exam, though you may complete it in less time if desired. During the exam, there will be two 10-minute breaks:
• First Break: After completing questions 1-60 and reviewing your answers.
• Second Break: After completing question 120 and reviewing your answers.
Note: Once you start a break, you cannot return to the previous section of the exam. After each break, you’ll sign back in and continue the remaining section(s) of the exam with the remaining time.
Retaking the Exam:
If you don’t pass on your first attempt, you may retake the exam. You are allowed up to three attempts within a one-year eligibility period. After three attempts, you must wait one year from the last exam date before you can reapply for the certification. During this one-year waiting period, you may apply for other PMI certifications.

Additional Education Requirements:
Candidates must also have at least 35 contact hours of formal project management education, unless they are an active CAPM® holder.
If you are an active CAPM holder, the 35 contact hours requirement is waived.

What are pretest questions in the PMP® examination?

Having pretest questions is a practice implemented by PMI® to gather statistical information on the validity of the questions and those are deliberated as experimental questions. You never come to know which question is pretest question during the examination or even at the end of the examination. Hence you must treat every question as a weighted (gradable) question.
